Where your water main is, and why it matters at 2am

Nearly every flooded house we attend has the same thing in common. Not old pipes, not bad luck — the owner did not know where their stop tap was, and spent eleven minutes finding out while the water kept coming.

So before you need it, go and find yours. It takes two minutes and it is the highest-value plumbing knowledge you will ever have.

Where the main tap actually is#

In most Australian homes the main shut-off is at the front boundary, in or beside the water meter box — usually a rectangular plastic or concrete lid set into the lawn or the front path, close to the street.

Lift the lid. You are looking for a tap or lever on the pipe, generally on the house side of the meter itself. Turn it clockwise until it stops. That is the whole house off.

A few variations worth knowing:

• Units and townhouses often have a shared meter bank with one tap per unit, labelled — badly — with a number. Find yours now, not later.
• Older houses sometimes have a second tap under the house or on an external wall.
• Acreage and tank supply will have the shut-off at the pump or tank instead.

Do not stop at the main tap#

The main tap kills everything, including the toilet you might want to keep using. Most fixtures also have their own small isolating valve right where they connect:

• Under the sink, on the flexible hoses
• Behind or beside the toilet cistern
• On the cold inlet at the top of your hot water unit

If you can isolate one fixture instead of the whole house, do that.

The hot water unit is its own case#

A leaking hot water tank keeps refilling itself onto your floor, which is why a slow drip can empty a lot of water into a laundry overnight. Close the valve on the cold inlet at the top of the unit. The tank stays full but stops taking more.

If it is a gas unit, turn the gas off at the appliance too.

What to do once it is off#

Turn off the power to anything wet at the switchboard — not at the wall switch — before you go near it. Then take a photo of what you can see and call.

That photo matters more than you would think. It decides what goes on the van, and it is the difference between one visit and two.

Should I try to fix it myself?#

Turning water off is yours. Anything past that generally is not — in most of Australia, plumbing work is licensed work, and an insurer will ask. Stopping the water and waiting is not giving up; it is the correct first step, and it is the one that limits the damage.

Find your tap this weekend. Show whoever else lives there. That is the job done.
