Blocked drains

The sink is filling up and it smells.

A drain that has stopped is usually telling you something about what is further down the line. We find the cause rather than pushing it along, so you know whether this is a one-off or the start of a pattern.

What is usually causing it

Kitchen drains block with fat that has cooled and set on the pipe wall. Bathroom drains block with hair and soap. Outside, the usual culprit is tree roots finding a hairline crack in old clay pipe and growing into the joint. Those three need completely different fixes, which is why guessing is expensive.

Camera down the line where it earns its keep

For a one-off kitchen blockage a camera is overkill. For a drain that has blocked twice, or a gully that overflows every heavy rain, it is the difference between clearing it again in six months and knowing exactly which section of pipe is the problem. We will tell you which situation you are in before we charge you for it.

What we do about roots

Cutting roots out clears the line today. It does not stop them coming back, because the crack that let them in is still there. Where that is what we find, you get told what a lasting repair involves and what it costs, so you can decide whether to keep clearing it or fix it properly.

Asked often

Will a supermarket drain cleaner fix it?

Sometimes, on a slow bathroom drain. On a fully blocked line it usually does nothing except sit in the pipe, and it is worth telling us if you have poured some in so we know what we are opening up.

Why does it block again a few months later?

Because the blockage was a symptom. Fat, roots or a damaged section will keep catching debris until the cause is dealt with. A repeat blockage in the same spot is the sign to look properly.
